Internship Resources
What is an Internship?
"An academic internship is a form of experiential education that integrates knowledge
and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skill development
in a professional setting. Students earn academic credit, or there is some other
connection to a degree-granting, educational institution. This work/learning arrangement
is overseen by a faculty or staff member of an educational institution and by a
designated employee of an organization. The internship is usually the length or
equivalent of an academic term, may be part-time or full-time, paid or unpaid. An
integral component of the experience that distinguishes it from other types of work
is one or more forms of structured and deliberate reflection contained within learning
agendas or objectives." - Definition formulated in May 2010 by internship professionals
subscribed to the Internship-Net listserv.
Internship Compensation and Internships for Credit
Student internships may be paid or unpaid, for credit or not-for-credit. Credit must be arranged in advance directly through the student’s academic department. Credit should not be confused for compensation as students pay tuition dollars to obtain credit. Internships may be both paid and for credit.
Students considering unpaid internships with "for-profit" private sector companies are encouraged to engage in job-shadowing, educational internship experiences to benefit student learning rather than providing direct benefit to the organization as set by Department of Labor six criteria test and guidelines. The Department of Labor recognizes that 501 (c)(3) designated non-profit organizations may be excluded from these guidelines. For details, please refer to http://www.dol.gov/whd/regs/compliance/whdfs71.pdf.
